New launch : more electric than ever

New launch : more electric than ever

BMW is revising its successful threesome and already anticipated the most important innovation a few weeks ago. But the pure electric version is reserved for China – unfortunately.

If you want to be in this league with a Bavarian limousine purely electrically, you still have to get into the BMW i4 and thus the electric version of the 4 Series Gran Coupé. The front of the BMW 3 Series has been redesigned with a new kidney grille and modified LED headlights. Apart from a newly designed rear apron, nothing fundamental has changed at the rear of the BMW 3 Series, which will be available from July. The dashboard makes the biggest step, because the curved double display familiar from the BMW iX and i4 now also replaces the familiar instruments of the previous model. While the driver is looking at a 12.3-inch display behind the wheel, the other functions can be operated on the 14.9-inch multifunction display in the center of the dashboard. Standard after the facelift are three-zone automatic air conditioning, navigation system, dimming interior mirror and parking sensors at the front and rear. On request, there are various functions as optional driver assistance modules. The BMW 3 Series will continue to be offered as a sedan and estate version. From the end of the year, the sports version of the BMW M3 will also be available as a touring for the first time.

The performance spectrum of the four and six-cylinder engines ranges from 110 kW / 150 hp to 275 kW / 374 hp. Above that are the M models. The top six-cylinder in the M 340i and the diesel versions are now equipped with a 48-volt electrical system with a boost function, which is intended to further reduce consumption. In addition, eight-speed automatic transmission and at least 17-inch alloy wheels are standard for all three-seater versions. All-wheel drive is mandatory for the six-cylinder models, which is available as an optional extra for various four-cylinder diesel and petrol models. This also applies to the plug-in versions, which remain in the range as the 320e and 330e with 150 kW / 204 hp / 300 Nm and 215 kW / 292 hp / 420 Nm. Your consumption is between 1.3 and 1.8 liters Super per 100 kilometers; however, the electric range of 59 to 64 kilometers is quite manageable.

The basic model is still the BMW 318i, which costs at least 43,900 euros as a 150 hp sedan and at least 45,000 euros as a touring car. Above that are the variants BMW 320i, 330i, M 340i and 320d, 330d and M 340d – each as a four-door and as a station wagon. The long-wheelbase version of the BMW i3 eDrive 35L is reserved for the Chinese market, where it is also produced. The 4.87 meter long Chinese version is powered by an electric motor that supplies the rear axle with 210 kW / 286 hp and a maximum torque of 400 Nm. From a standing start, the Bavarian Chinese accelerates to 100 km/h in 6.2 seconds. The economical consumption of 14.3 kWh per 100 kilometers ensures that the maximum range with the 70.3 kWh battery pack is over 520 kilometers. Compared to the European and American versions, however, the charging capacity is very manageable with a maximum of 95 kilowatts.
