Auto International: Chinese start in Japan: BYD reports back

Build your Dreams was once one of the most promising Chinese car brands from the very beginning. But other manufacturers came to the fore and it became quiet around BYD, especially in Europe. Now there is a sign of life from Japan.

It seems as if Build your Dreams is currently focusing on other world markets than Europe. After the Chinese car manufacturer has concentrated on the gigantic home market in particular, the overdue market entry in Japan is now over. At the official launch, there will initially be three electric models: BYD Atto 3, Dolphin and Seal – others are to follow – all of them electric. The BYD Atto 3 will be the first BYD car to be sold in Japan from early 2023. It will be followed by the BYD Dolphin and SEAL models – also electrically powered – from mid-2023. At the beginning of the year, BYD stopped producing combustion engines and has since relied solely on plug-in hybrids and electric models.

“As one of the first companies to develop electric vehicles in the world, BYD has 27 years of know-how and experience in the field of new energy vehicles and masters the innovative technologies related to batteries, electric motors, electronic control systems and automotive-grade chips,” says Wang Chuanfu, Chairman and President of BYD, “Supported by consumer expectation, BYD is entering the Japanese NEV market. Through the joint efforts of BYD and the local NEV market, we can fulfill our pioneering role in e-mobility for a better life.” BYD began supplying rechargeable batteries to Japanese customers in 1999. Later, Bult your Dreams manufactured innovative energy storage, solar energy products, electric buses and forklifts for the Japanese market.

BYD was founded in 1995 as a multinational high-tech company and is currently active in the automotive, electronics, new energy and rail transport industries. Especially on the Chinese home market, Build your Dreams has become one of the leading companies in the energy and transport sector. There had been rumors again and again that the company wanted to target the European market with electric cars and commercial vehicles. So far this has not happened. Liu Xueliang, responsible for sales of vehicles in the Asia-Pacific region: “Starting today, BYD will gradually build a complete sales and service system together with Japanese dealers and partners to provide local people with a low-carbon lifestyle and a better customer experience At present, BYD has electric vehicles in more than 400 cities in 70 countries and regions on six continents.

Build your Dreams can look back on successful numbers, especially on the home market. Total sales of electric vehicles recently exceeded 640,000 units, bringing the company to a total of more than two million electrified vehicles sold. In the month of June alone, the number rose by 133,762 cars, which, despite the ongoing corona pandemic, corresponds to growth of almost 170 percent compared to the previous year. The production of plug-in hybrids and electric cars was almost equal at 64,000 to almost 70,000 units. The best-selling model on the home market is currently the top model of the BYD Han, which reached a record high with 25,439 units sold in June. Since its launch in 2020, the sedan has sold more than 250,000 units. In second place in the sales statistics: the compact SUV Yuan Plus, based on the in-house electric platform 3.0, with almost 20,000 vehicles in June alone. BYD is particularly proud of the so-called blade battery. The battery pack made of iron phosphate is cobalt-free and brought completely new performance data for the car manufacturer. This will be gradually introduced in all model series.
