Even if it may look different: not everything at Mercedes revolves around the electric EQ models and the newly proclaimed luxury strategy. The two basic models of the A and B class are enjoying an extremely manageable model update and will remain fresh for the years to come, until they too become electric.
Admittedly, neither the Mercedes A nor the larger B-Class has changed much. Slight retouching on the front mask, the hood and the rear – if you didn’t know better, you would hardly recognize it. But before the new generation of the fully electric A-Class starts the Stuttgart model portfolio from the middle of the decade, the facelifts for the A- and B-Class should keep customers a bit happy. Surprisingly, those interested in LED headlights still have to pay extra for both models and the small seven-inch instrument cluster hasn’t been removed either. In order to look at two contemporary 10.25-inch digital displays, the option list must also be tried. After all, things that are taken for granted such as a reversing camera, a USB package or a leather steering wheel are now also standard. But only from the equipment variant Progressive there are befitting LED headlights, lumbar support, parking and mirror package.
The petrol engine range has been electrified and includes four-cylinder units with seven or eight-speed dual-clutch transmissions. As mild hybrids, they are equipped with a 48-volt electrical system that provides a 10-kilowatt boost when moving off, thereby also reducing consumption. The plug-in hybrid of the A 250e offers even more electric power in the A-Class, which is still available as a saloon and hatchback model. The stately total output of 160 kW / 218 hp and 450 Nm is offset by a standard consumption of 1.0 liters per 100 kilometers and an all-electric range of more than 80 kilometers. The hatchback version goes from zero to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds and has a top speed of 225 km/h. The sedan is even faster with a speed of 230 km/h.
In addition, the A-Class remains on offer as the A 180 and A 200 with 136 and 163 hp as front-wheel drive vehicles. The versions A 220 and A 250 offer not only 190 and 224 hp, but also an obligatory all-wheel drive. The diesel versions of the A 180d, A200d and A220d with 116, 150 and 190 hp are particularly economical. Above that are the sports versions AMG A35 / AMG A45 with 306 or 421 hp and top speeds of up to 270 km/h.
In terms of drive and standard equipment, the Mercedes B-Class, which has also only been slightly revised optically, does not differ. Here, too, the 160 kW / 218 hp plug-in hybrid is likely to be the most interesting variant for many users. However, there are powerful AMG versions and the 224 hp Mercedes B 250 4matic is the sporty flagship. It consumes 7.1 liters of Super per 100 kilometers and achieves an impressive top speed of 250 km/h.
