New presentation: Honda e:Ny1:: The big E

The Honda e is already a few years old. Now the Asian car manufacturer is following up with the e:Ny1:. The battery-electric SUV is designed for the B segment, has a range of up to 412 kilometers with one battery charge and is targeting competitors such as the Opel Mokka Electric.

With the Honda e, the Asian carmaker has managed a sympathy coup. However, that was four years ago and if you want to achieve the ambitious goal of 30 electrified models to be launched by 2030, new vehicles will soon have to roll into dealerships. An important element of the electric offensive is the Honda e:Ny1:, a battery-electric SUV that is something like the big brother of the Honda e and hits the nerve of the time. However, the B segment of e-crossovers is highly competitive.

The Honda strategists also know this, which is why the look of the stilts Stromer also differs significantly from that of the childish speedster Honda e. Instead of googly eyes, narrow LED light slits flash aggressively in the landscape. The design of the e-crossover also dispenses with the excessive use of edges and beads and instead relies on large surfaces. This results in a pleasant visual simplicity that you don’t always find with Honda. As an example, the optics riot sportsman Civic Type R is mentioned, but the extroverted appearance suits it. Also new are the white Honda emblems, which will adorn all e-mobiles from now on.

Unlike the Honda e, the e:Ny1: is not designed as a city vehicle. The 68.8-kilowatt-hour battery enables a maximum range of 412 kilometers according to the WLTP cycle. The aerodynamically designed underbody also contributes to this. For comparison: the Honda e is 222 kilometers (WLTP). At a DC fast charging station, the energy storage is filled from 10 to 80 percent within 45 minutes.

A light and compact drive unit, consisting of an electric motor and a gearbox, provides propulsion. The electric motor has an output of 150 kW / 204 hp and generates a maximum torque of 310 Newton meters. The Honda e:Ny1: doesn’t tear out any trees with that, but the performance is right in the segment and is easily enough to be fast on the road.

In the interior, the large 15.1-inch display, which serves as the command center for the infotainment, catches the eye. So the Japanese also rely primarily on touchscreen operation. Nevertheless, there are buttons on and on the center console for conventional operation. There is also a tray for inductive charging. The many storage options and the generous amount of space are also noticeable, which can be traced back to the platform of the e:Ny1: and is typical of electric vehicles.

The basis for the electric SUV is the new e:N Architecture F. This platform was specially developed for front-engine models and is characterized by high torsional rigidity, which is achieved through the use of high-strength steel. According to Honda, around 47 percent of the chassis is made of this particularly rigid metal.
