An AFIP change could impact cell phone prices

The IMEI is a 15-digit code prerecorded by the manufacturer to identify each cell phone worldwide.

The number allows the individualization of the brand and model in accordance with what is defined by the GSM Association (GSMA, for its acronym in English), which brings together mobile operators.

It will be located under the battery, printed on the equipment or on the original case.

Until now, mobile devices had to have a customs stamp, which implied an additional cost for importers of these products or their components.

From this new norm, they will be able to opt for the use of the IMEI instead of the tax stamps.

The code that replaces the traditional stamps will allow the customs service to obtain information in real time from cell phones and their associated documentation, as well as optimize risk analysis and selective controls, to safeguard the legal possession of imported products and know their traceability.
