The number of Bafög recipients among students is increasing again after ten years

Since 2012, the number of Bafög recipients among students in Germany has been falling continuously. The Federal Statistical Office is now reporting a slight increase of 0.4 percent for the first time.

The number of Bafög recipients among German students rose last year for the first time in around ten years. As the Federal Statistical Office reported on Friday in Wiesbaden, it increased slightly by 0.4 percent compared to the previous year 2020 or 2000 to 468,000. Before that, the number of students who received student loans had fallen continuously every year since 2012.

Less Bafög reference among students and trainees

Bafög is not only paid to students, but also to schoolchildren or trainees if they meet the conditions. Calculated on the basis of this total, the number of Bafög recipients fell by three percent or around 16,000 to around 623,000 last year, according to the Federal Statistical Office. The so-called Bafög is the state financial support for people in training.

The average monthly funding amount was therefore 562 euros, six euros more than in the previous year. The height varies from person to person. It depends, among other things, on whether the recipients live alone or still with their parents. The total expenditure for Bafög benefits amounted to around 2.9 billion euros in 2021. That was one percent more than in 2020.
