The volume of flights in German airspace in August was around 64 percent of the pre-crisis level. Only at one German airport was the pandemic barely noticeable.
As the first airport in Germany, Leipzig-Halle registered more flights in August than before the Corona crisis. The German Air Traffic Control (DFS) counted 6,693 flight movements and thus 5 percent more than in the same month of August 2019.
Leipzig-Halle benefited both from the increasing numbers of holiday flights during the holiday season and from the continued strong cargo operations. The hub of the logistics company DHL is the second largest cargo airport in Germany after Frankfurt and was less affected by flight cancellations than other airports during the entire Corona crisis. With 28,882 take-offs and landings, Frankfurt had 62 percent of the figure two years ago in August.
In August, DFS controllers registered a total of 198,460 flights under instrument flight rules in German airspace. That was 64 percent of the volume from the pre-crisis month of August 2019. The upward trend continued for the sixth month in a row, as the air traffic control reported on Wednesday in Langen near Frankfurt. In July it was only 57 percent.
