At short notice, Swiss Post announced changes to the collection of parcels. A pick-up code is generated in the new Post & DHL app, which should be more secure. But there are also other innovations that package customers should be aware of.

Scannable pick-up code brings more security

From 9 September 2021, a new, scannable pick-up code will be introduced in the Post & DHL app for receiving parcels at the packing station. The previously required DHL customer card is no longer required. According to DHL, the app will become the center for receiving parcels and should make operating the yellow machines easier and more convenient.

The individually generated pick-up code is time-limited, device-specific and should be more secure. In addition, a valid pick-up code can only be generated with an activated terminal of the packing station customer. Banks and savings banks are already using a similar procedure for online banking.

That will change for Swiss Post customers in detail

In detail, the following changes for customers who have a shipment addressed to the Packstation:

  • To remove a parcel from the packing station, customers only need the new pick-up code that is generated in the Post & DHL app. This code is held in front of the packing station’s scanner and the compartment opens. The customer card is no longer required.
  • The new pick-up code – unlike the previous four-digit pick-up code – is regenerated at short intervals in the Post & DHL app and is therefore more secure than before.
  • Customers can use the new procedure by updating their Post & DHL app and activating their device once within the app. (Note from DHL: Depending on the app store used, the availability of the new app version may be delayed by a few days.)
  • Sending the pick-up code by email for existing customers will no longer apply after a transition phase.
  • The new service only applies to customers who have their shipments addressed directly to a packing station. Parcels to your own address that have been rerouted to a packing station because the recipient was not found can still be picked up from the mailbox with the notification card. The dispatch of parcels to the packing station also remains unchanged.

“The changeover to the new pick-up code in connection with the Post & DHL app is a logical step so that our customers can use the Packstation even more easily,” explains Holger Bartels, Head of Multi-Channel Sales in the Post and Parcel division of the Deutsche Post DHL Group. The company currently provides its customers with over 7,500 Packstations nationwide. Due to the high demand, there will be a total of 12,500 Packstations by the end of 2023.
