How is the profile of credit takers?

Now, what is the profile of credit takers in this market? According to the latest data from the BCRA, the number of people with financing grew by 22% last year, reaching around 8.8 million, mainly due to the dynamism of individuals who represent almost 99% of all debtors. This is the highest value since January 2018.

gender and age

Although the number of men increased by 20% in the year, it is women who show the greatest annual positive performance with more than 25% and those who in turn reach the greatest participation throughout the entire series (52%). When observing the age ranges identified, it is people aged 30-64 who have the greatest participation (representing 68% of the total number of natural persons, while the age range of those under 30 years of age was the one that had the most important year-on-year increase with 138%.

Regarding the identified subgroups, the fintech explained the behavior of the second half of 2021, being mostly (61%) people in the age range between 30-64 years, followed by those under 30 years (34%). On the other hand, the exclusive debtors of the PNFC (those that do not register debt in financial entities) continued to grow during the second semester, exceeding 4.5 million people at the end of 2021. In this way, the exclusive debtors of the PNFC they reached 52% of total debtors, a maximum value since January 2018.

In any case, the number of people who simultaneously have assistance from the PNFC and financial institutions also increased, although to a lesser extent, 9% compared to December 2020 and 12% compared to June 2021, reaching 4.2 million people in December 2021. A point shared by both men and women is that the average balances of debtors shared with the entities are approximately double that of those who exclusively have assistance from the PNFC.

In December 2021, these average balances were in current values of $67,000 for women and $78,000 for men who have assistance from financial institutions. “If we consider the number of debtors assisted by the PNFC but without debt from credit card assistance, it exceeded 3.8 million people as of December 2021, 80% more than December of the previous year and 73% higher than June 2021”, explains the BCRA.

double assist

PNFC debtors who simultaneously have assistance with financial entities have a higher financing balance with said PNFC through non-bank credit cards than the rest of the assistance. However, when the type of assistance that these same debtors have with financial entities is analyzed, a majority percentage of debt other than credit cards results. Financing for assistance other than credit cards has the highest share among the exclusive clients of the PNFCs, reaching an average 57% from January 2018 to September 2020.

However, as of October 2020, a recomposition was observed in the participations, with personal loans and other types of assistance having a lower proportion of debt, with an average close to 46% until December 2021. “This change , product of the increase in financing via credit cards, could be related to the greater relative reduction in credit card rates compared to personal loans”, explains the BCRA chaired by Miguel Pesce.

In turn, the preponderance of clients with assistance by credit cards in debtors shared with financial entities with respect to those exclusive to PNFC (where the participation of cards is smaller) could be due to the fact that clients with assistance by Non-bank credit cards have substantially lower non-performance ratios than the rest of the assistance, adjusting to the credit offer parameters of financial entities.
