Traffic: Deutsche Bahn more punctual in long-distance traffic than in December

It’s a bit uphill in terms of punctuality at Deutsche Bahn. The group refers to the high number of construction sites.

Deutsche Bahn was more punctual in long-distance traffic in January than in December, but missed the value of the same month last year by a large margin. As the group announced on Friday, 73.2 percent of the ICE and IC stops were reached on time in January. Punctuality was 61.3 percent in December and 80.9 percent in January 2022. “Numerous construction sites also slowed down the ICE and IC trains at the start of the year,” the company said. “Never before has so much been built at DB in one January as at the beginning of 2023.”

A train is considered late in the statistics if it arrives at its destination with a delay of more than six minutes. Train cancellations are not taken into account. Deutsche Bahn has been struggling with major punctuality problems in long-distance traffic for months. In the summer, at times less than 60 percent of the stops were reached in time.

For the current year, Deutsche Bahn has set a goal of more than 70 percent punctuality. At the beginning of the year, the values are usually better than in the following months, which can be explained, among other things, by the capacity utilization of the trains.
