Delivery service turnover is high. This is another reason why trade unions in the industry have a hard time.
The union Food-Genuss-Gaststätten (NGG) calls on the restaurant delivery service Lieferando to negotiate wages for the approximately 7,000 employees of the brand. “The employees do not want temporary special payments and bonus programs, but good working conditions and fair wages for everyone, guaranteed by a collective agreement,” said NGG department head Mark Baumeister, according to a statement on Monday. “It is clear to us that an hourly wage of 15 euros without allowances will not work.”
Other NGG demands include a 13th monthly salary and higher supplements for marginal and holiday shifts. Lieferando is a brand owned by the Dutch group Just Eat Takeaway. It is true that elected works councils give drivers the option of operational co-determination. However, there is no collective agreement for them. Trade unions have traditionally had a hard time with delivery services, mainly because of the high turnover.
Lieferando initially did not comment directly on the NGG demands for negotiations and pointed out that the drivers were already earning more than 14 euros per hour. “The wage level is therefore higher than that of service staff in the catering industry, and their hourly wage is the same as that of drivers in system catering according to the collective agreement.” All are also employed directly and on a permanent basis, which is unusual in the industry.
