The family confirmed a corresponding tweet from the Russian Embassy in Vienna on Friday. Schenz was one of the most influential business leaders and held numerous positions – from the President of the Federation of Austrian Industries in Vienna to the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Austrian Research Center and President of the Austrian-Russian Friendship Society.
Schenz, who was born in Vienna in 1940, studied technical physics at the Vienna University of Technology and his diploma thesis dealt with the topic of nuclear physics in the Seibersdorf reactor center. After several years of scientific work, Schenz switched to OMV in 1969, where he worked on the board from 1988 and as chairman of the board and general director from 1992. At the end of 2001 he retired and at the same time was appointed the government’s capital markets commissioner, which he was until 2012.
From 2000 to 2022, Schenz acted as Vice President of the Austrian Economic Chamber. “With Richard Schenz we are not only losing a great personality, but also a tireless and important representative of the interests of the domestic business location and its entrepreneurs,” said Chamber of Commerce President Harald Mahrer and Secretary General Karlheinz Kopf in a press release.
