Agriculture: More eggs from organic production

Consumers have a choice. When buying eggs, you can choose between different ways of keeping chickens. The Federal Statistical Office has new figures on this.

Organic eggs are still in demand in Germany. Their production rose last year by 6.3 percent to a good 1.8 billion, as the Federal Statistical Office announced on Wednesday. Despite declines, barn husbandry is still the dominant form of husbandry with 59.7 percent of the eggs produced. Five years ago, their share was 65.4 percent.

During the same period, the proportion of eggs from free-range husbandry increased from 15.9 to 21.5 percent and eggs from organic production from 10.7 to 13.8 percent. The remaining 5 percent was kept in small groups. This form has replaced cage farming, which has been banned in Germany since 2010. It expires at the end of 2025.

A total of around 13.2 billion eggs were produced last year in farms with at least 3,000 places. Production increased by 1.4 percent compared to the previous year.
