326 million euros in the fight against the labor shortage

326 million euros in the fight against the labor shortage
The measures also aim to get women interested in technology

691,000 people were employed in Upper Austria at the end of February, 9,000 more than a year ago. The unemployment rate fell by 0.1 percentage points to 4.7 percent. 31,000 vacancies are registered with the Public Employment Service (AMS). These developments towards full employment also have an impact on the “Pact for work and qualification”, which was presented today, Friday. 326 million euros will be invested in 2023 (2022: 350 million euros). 167 million euros are allocated to the AMS Upper Austria, 110 million euros to the state, the rest comes from the Social Ministry Service Upper Austria (SMS).

“The money used to be used to get the unemployed into work. Now it’s a matter of serving the need for manpower,” said Economics Minister Markus Achleitner. The measures were analyzed, the total reduced only slightly and four priorities set: focus on the first labor market; Attracting and retaining skilled workers, especially through qualified influx; special projects, mainly related to mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology; Specialist initiatives for the fields of energy and technology.

More than 100,000 people should benefit from the measures. In order to make them better known in the companies, a “roadshow” is planned in the regional offices of the Chamber of Commerce.

IV does not support the pact

“The offers are there, but we have to find enough participants,” says AMS country manager Gerhard Straßer. One pushes basic and basic training in combination with company-related qualification. The focus of the SMS is on young people with disabilities and on people with disabilities, said state office manager Birgit Deu: “The number of young people with mental problems is increasing.” Since 2022 there has been free treatment and care for them.
Criticism of the pact comes from the Federation of Austrian Industries (IV) Upper Austria: There should be no continuation of the existing system that promotes unchanged measures with similarly high sums. IVOÖ President Stefan Pierer calls for an innovative, flexible and tailor-made package.
