Those who are studying have to pay more and more money for a room in a shared flat – this is the result of a new study. See where the housing costs are particularly high and where you can get away comparatively cheaply.
According to an analysis, students looking for a room in a shared flat in a German university town have to pay significantly more money than they did last semester. A room currently costs an average of 458 euros per month – which is 23 euros more than six months ago. This emerges from a study by the Moses Mendelssohn Institute in cooperation with the real estate portal WG-Gesucht.de, which was published on Wednesday. Housing offers in all 94 German university towns with at least 5000 students were evaluated.
Nationwide, 94 university locations with at least 5000 students were examined. On average, 458 euros per month were called up for a room in a shared flat. A year ago it was around 414 euros – so the prices increased by more than ten percent.

The map shows an overview of the 25 most expensive (in red) and ten cheapest cities (in blue) in Germany in terms of housing costs. The difference to the most expensive place Munich with 720 euros and the cheapest place Chemnitz with 253 euros is therefore 467 euros.
Shared rooms only with a full mini-job salary?
According to the managing director of the Moses Mendelssohn Institute, Stefan Brauckmann, the increase is mainly due to higher energy costs. He urgently called for additional financial support for students who do not live with their parents. “In more and more cities, the full salary of a mini-job, 520 euros, is now needed to bear the housing costs,” said Brauckmann. The recently granted energy cost allowance of 200 euros therefore only has a short-term effect on many students.
As mentioned, the students have to put a lot of money on the table in Munich: According to the study, the housing costs there rose again from 700 to 720 euros. The capital followed closely behind with an increase in the average monthly rent for a flat share from EUR 550 to EUR 640 now. At the end of 2021, this value was still less than 500 euros. In Berlin, an increase of almost a third can be seen within a year and a half.
