He was thrilled that there was so much going on in Linz on a Sunday, said Ingo Mews, who received the keys to his Citroën C3 at the award ceremony of this year’s stock market game on Monday evening. To do this, the man from Bremen accepted a 13-hour bus ride and used his first visit to the Upper Austrian capital to take a walk through the “pretty city center”.

The fact that he won the stock market game by 0.22 percentage points on the last day was “simply lucky,” said the German. He has been playing in the OÖN stock market game – the largest in the country – for about ten years. “And I’ve never been better than 4000-something.” The equity culture in Germany is as modest as in Austria, said Mews. “We can all learn a lot there.”

This time, the web designer always bought titles that had announced quarterly releases for the following day. “And everyone then consistently gained two to three percent,” says Mews about his concept. He admitted to having taken more risks in this stock market game than in real life with his own money.

This learning experience is also the reason why Raiffeisen Oberösterreich has been a partner in this stock exchange game for more than 20 years, says the general director of Raiffeisenlandesbank Oberösterreich, Heinrich Schaller. For Schaller, the fact that speculation is encouraged is “complete nonsense. We want to convey how the capital market works and how you move in it. And you just never stop learning.” Schaller was particularly pleased about the large number of school classes that took part and were also in the audience at the award ceremony.

There is a LASK home game as a prize for the best class. In the winning class from the Linz HTL Paul-Hahn-Straße, which prevailed with the help of their teacher, there are actually many LASK fans: “We are very happy with it.”

Facts and figures on the stock market game

8115 participants took part in the 2023 stock exchange game – around 5,630 adults and 2,250 pupils as well as 232 school classes.

23.94 percent increase in value: With this result, Ingo Mews won the overall ranking of the stock market game. In two months he has increased his fictitious starting capital of 50,000 euros by almost a quarter. Mews made 48 transactions for this. Student winner Zakir Jawadi managed 74 transactions, an increase of 17.08 percent. The 4AFET class at HTL Paul-Hahn-Strasse achieved a profit of 16.68 percent with 16 transactions.

Tesla was the most traded stock in all three categories. Second place went to voest-alpine for adults and schoolchildren, and OMV for classes. The average result of all stock exchange game participants was slightly negative – for adults with 1.08 percent, for schoolchildren with 1.03 percent, for classes with 0.49 percent.

“Women should use the stock exchange for their pension”

How can women increase their lifetime income? The director of the economic research institute Eco Austria, Monika Köppl-Turyna, dealt with this question in her presentation at the award ceremony of the OÖN stock exchange game.

Apart from the fact that girls are still in occupations that promise a lower lifetime income, the income curves of childless women and men would be relatively parallel. But as soon as a woman becomes pregnant and then works part-time, there are enormous differences that would ultimately result in pension differences of up to 60 percent, said the economist, who qualified as a professor at Johannes Kepler University and is one of those who Government asks for advice on economic issues.

Childcare options should therefore be increased and couples should better divide up their chores at home. In addition, the financial education of women should also be improved, because this is less than that of men, Köppl-Turyna referred to a corresponding study. Pension provision via a second and third pillar is particularly important for women: “You should use the stock exchange for pensions.”
