Energy: The choice of location for the Rügen LNG terminal causes criticism

There are signs of political resistance to the planned liquefied natural gas terminal on the island of Rügen. From the point of view of the Federal Ministry of Economics, this should become a safety buffer. Environmentalists are against it.

The Mukran location in the east of Rügen, favored by the federal government for an LNG terminal, has been met with criticism from associations and in state politics. “With the present plans, an energy industry problem alleged on the basis of uncertain data is to be solved once again at the expense of nature,” said Sascha Müller-Kraenner, the federal director of the German Environmental Aid (DUH), on Wednesday. He announced political and legal opposition to the planned liquefied natural gas terminal.

The President of the German Nature Conservation Union (Nabu), Jörg-Andreas Krüger, accused Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck (Greens) and Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) of “pushing through a project on Rügen with a crowbar, the need and benefit of which is doubtful”. The project is harmful to marine nature and the climate.

The district administrator of Vorpommern-Rügen, Stefan Kerth (SPD), called for a reliable written basis for discussion. “We can’t work our way through oral traditions.” He also expects clear signals that the region will receive advantages in the energy sector. He referred to the high network charges.

Habeck travels to Mukran

The CDU in the Schwerin state parliament doubts this. “Neither will our electricity prices drop because of the terminal, nor will Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania benefit in any other way,” said parliamentary group leader Franz-Robert Liskow. He also considers the terminal to be unnecessary in view of the supply situation. The parliamentary group of the Left Party, which is co-governing in Schwerin, called for better communication.

It was announced on Tuesday that the federal government is planning to land LNG in Mukran in the east of the Baltic Sea island. From the point of view of the Federal Ministry of Economics, a safety buffer in the capacities is necessary in order to be prepared for a plant failure, for example. In addition, a feed-in in the north-east is also important for the supply of other European countries. Habeck wants to talk to the state government about the plans in Mukran on Friday.
