Potential security risk: software update for 1.1 million Tesla cars in China

The People’s Republic of China is Tesla’s second most important sales market after the United States. Several vehicle models from the electric car manufacturer are now being recalled there.

The electric car manufacturer Tesla has to fix a possible security risk in just over 1.1 million vehicles in China with a software update. The state agency for market regulation spoke on Friday (local time) of a product recall that will begin on May 29. A total of three imported and two China-made Tesla models that were produced from January 2019 to April 2023 are affected.

According to the Chinese authorities, the problem is a brake defect that Tesla will fix with a software update. Experts assume that the software will be updated via a mobile phone connection and that the vehicles do not have to be taken to a workshop for this.

In November, two people died in an accident in southern China’s Guangdong province after a Tesla Model Y crashed into a crowd at high speed. Chinese state media speculated that the vehicle’s brakes may have failed.

The People’s Republic of China is Tesla’s second most important sales market after the United States. In 2019, the US company opened its first international production facility with the “Gigafactory 3” in Shanghai.
