Energy: SPD sticks to the January start date for the heating law

According to SPD party leader Lars Klingbeil, the law on heating replacement should come into force on January 1, 2024. However, the draft approved by the federal cabinet still has to be revised.

Despite criticism from several federal states, the SPD is sticking to the planned start date for the law on heating replacement. The goal remains that it will come into force on January 1, 2024, said party leader Lars Klingbeil on Monday in Berlin. However, the law must be made better in Parliament beforehand, including through a subsidy graded according to income, transitional periods, more tenant protection and a farewell to the rigid 80-year age limit.

According to the draft adopted by the Federal Cabinet, from 2024 onwards every newly installed heating system should be operated with 65 percent renewable energy. This should apply to all owners under 80 years of age. Existing oil and gas heaters can continue to be operated, broken heaters can be repaired. The law is intended to herald the departure from gas and oil heating systems.

Klingbeil emphasized that anyone who is serious about climate protection must start now. The SPD is driving a course of social balance. “We are not on the full brakes like others are doing. We still say that you can do climate protection if you bang your head against the wall,” he emphasized. The SPD’s success in the elections in Bremen has shown that this is the right attitude. The guiding principle must be that nobody is left in the lurch on the way to more climate protection. If the government manages to do this and doesn’t appear as controversial in public as it has in the past, trust can be regained.
