Postal services: Swiss Post wants letter postage to be increased ahead of time

After the increase in early 2022, Swiss Post wants to increase letter postage again. Normally this only happens every three years. What does the Federal Network Agency say?

Deutsche Post has submitted an application to the Federal Network Agency to be allowed to increase letter postage early next year. In view of the drastically increased costs due to inflation, higher energy prices, the latest collective agreement and an unexpectedly sharp drop in letter volumes, there is no way around a premature increase, said Post Manager Nikola Hagleitner according to the announcement.

The company is not allowed to determine the postage itself. Instead, the Federal Network Agency makes specifications as to how Swiss Post is allowed to turn the price screw. Normally this happens every three years. The current postage has been in effect since the beginning of 2022, when the domestic standard letter rose from 80 to 85 cents. The current postage is scheduled to expire at the end of 2024. It was set at a time when inflation was comparatively low.
