Consequences of war: LNG in Mukran: State government MV asks the federal government for a postponement

An LNG terminal is to be built in Sassnitz-Mukran in Mecklenburg – but the construction is controversial in terms of tourism and the environment. Now the country is asking for more time – for persuasion.

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is asking for the inclusion of Mukran in the federal LNG Acceleration Act to be postponed. In a joint statement, Economics Minister Reinhard Meyer (SPD) and Environment Minister Till Backhaus (SPD) said on Tuesday evening: “The federal government wants Mukran as a location. For acceptance on site, it is crucial that there is sufficient time for discussions and discussion of the plans with the involved.”

The state is working on a catalog of measures from the point of view of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, in particular the island of Rügen, which should be sent to the federal government in a timely manner. “The state government is therefore asking the federal government not to initiate the LNG Amendment Act now.”

For the construction of a liquefied natural gas terminal planned in Mukran, the port in the east of the island of Rügen is to be included in the LNG Acceleration Act. This became known on Monday from circles in the Federal Ministry of Economics. The inclusion is intended to pave the way for a faster approval process. The specific planning documents would have to be checked by the competent state authorities. According to current estimates, the Federal Ministry of Economics believes that commissioning in the first quarter of 2024 is possible.

The planned terminal is controversial. Critics, especially on the island, are concerned about tourism, which is particularly important there, but also about the environment and criticize the creation of overcapacities that they believe are unnecessary.
