This was announced by Statistics Austria on Wednesday. That means an acceleration in CPI inflation compared to March, when prices rose 9.2 percent year-on-year. The final inflation rate is just below the 9.8 percent flash estimate made by the statisticians at the beginning of the month. Compared to the previous month of March, prices increased by 0.8 percent.

Price hikes for package tours, especially flight tickets, were the main reason for the sharp increase compared to March and largely compensated for fuel savings, said Statistics Austria Director General Tobias Thomas in a broadcast. Housing, water and energy rose by 14.7 percent year-on-year and thus remained the most important driver of inflation year-on-year. Gas, in particular, was two-thirds more expensive, while the increase in electricity was lower thanks to electricity price brakes. Hotels and restaurants also rose by almost 15 percent. Food, the price of which is currently the focus of political discussion, was 13.2 percent more expensive than a year ago. This area alone contributed 1.51 percentage points to inflation, slightly less than in March.

The shopping basket for daily shopping (micro shopping basket) rose by 13.8 percent and thus more than general inflation, while weekly shopping (mini shopping basket) rose by 6.4 percent. According to the consumer price index (HICP) harmonized at EU level, inflation was 9.5 percent in April 2023.
