Wholesale prices accelerated in April to 6.9% and were below retail inflation

For the second consecutive month, wholesale inflation remains below the retail CPI.

Wholesale prices accelerated in April to 6.9% and for the second consecutive month they were below retail inflation (8.4%), as reported on Wednesday by the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC).

Thus, in the last twelve months they accumulated an increase of 103.9% year-on-year and in the first four-month period they climbed 28%. Meanwhile, domestic prices rose 6.7% per month, imported prices rose 9.2%, and the cost of electricity increased 7.7%.

“Both at a general level and within the Primary Products category, Livestock products were among those that became more expensive: 11.4% monthly on average, explaining almost 1 pp of total wholesale inflation. However, this rise seems to be due to somewhat to a recomposition of prices after some nominal falls in March. So far this year, livestock accumulates an average increase of 40% (12 pp above wholesale inflation)“, analyzed the consultancy Icg.

construction cost

For his part, the cost of construction increased by 7.8%mainly affected by the rise of 7.1% in materials, 7.9% in labor and 10.8% in general expenses, as reported by INDEC on Wednesday.

“Construction materials marked their highest increase since Aug-22, also coinciding with a month with turbulence in the parallel exchange market”emphasized Icg.

So, in the last twelve months the construction price index climbed to 113.4% and in the first four months of the year it closed with a rise of 27.3%.

The ACM consultancy analyzed the construction situation and stated: “by deflating construction costs at the official and alternative exchange rates, we can see how construction costs at the official exchange rate increased by 11.3% a/ a, while the CCL fell 7.7% yoy as a result of the jump in parallel dollars that occurred in the last week of April. This reverses the trend of recent months, where costs measured in the CCL dollar grew more than in the official dollar.“.

In this way, INDEC concluded with the dissemination of the indices related to the evolution of prices that began last week when it reported that in April the retail segment registered an increase of 8.4%.
