Survey: AI overtakes Metaverse as future technology

Two years ago, the vision of a digital world was still closely associated with the term metaverse. Many people now believe that artificial intelligence will prevail as the technology of the future.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is seen by people in Germany as the most important future digital technology. This is the result of a representative survey by Yougov commissioned by the Internet exchange operator DE-CIX in Frankfurt. 41 percent of those surveyed assumed that AI will prevail in the future.

The topic of artificial intelligence has received a great deal of public attention in recent months thanks to the text robot ChatGPT from the Californian start-up OpenAI. The world’s largest software company, Microsoft, has invested billions to integrate OpenAI technology into its products across the board. This is linked to an attempt to question the supremacy of the internet giant Google. Google, in turn, countered the advance with its own AI chatbot (“Bard”) and a broad AI integration in Google search and other services of the group.

Hype about AI is pushing back the Metaverse trend

The hype surrounding AI is pushing back another hot topic that made big headlines two years ago, namely the Metaverse. On the one hand, this term describes a digital and interactive environment that can be entered with virtual reality glasses. In it, users can work, play, meet or shop as avatars. The metaverse also includes applications in which digital information is displayed in the real field of vision of the user. However, only 14 percent of people in Germany currently believe that new digital VR worlds such as the Metaverse will prevail as future technology.

On the other hand, four out of ten respondents (40 percent) believe that the smart home concept will also be permanently relevant as a technology. The term refers to an “intelligent home” in which electronic devices are networked and processes are automated in such a way that they make everyday life easier for the residents or help to save energy. The values for the topics e-health (28 percent) as well as smart city and autonomous driving (24 percent each) are lower.

In the Yougov survey, 59 percent of those questioned said that the network must be better expanded in order to meet the future requirements of new technologies. Half of Germans (51 percent) would like to see lower costs for internet connections (mobile and stationary) in the future. 20 percent of Germans would be willing to pay more for better connections.
