For failing to comply with Fair Prices, Commerce limited access to dollars for imports to Día supermarkets

The Secretary of Commerce reported that the Día supermarket chain will lose its priority access to foreign currency to pay for imports for failing to comply with the stipulated increases in the Fair Prices program.

The Commerce secretary suspended from chain supermarkets Day for 30 days for failing in the program Fair Prices repeatedly and unreasonably increase product values.

The sanction will consist of a restriction on the priority use of foreign currency to pay for imports as stipulated in the agreement, as reported by the Government. The decision to suspend Día was made after inspect more than 120 branches where it was found that there were increases of 8.33% average in products that are part of the program, 3.33 points above the agreed 5%.

After leading one of the operations, the Secretary of Commerce, Matías Tombolini, remarked that, in addition to the undue increases, they found “expired products and difference between the price seen on the shelf and what is finally charged to consumers“.

“For this reason, we proceeded to suspend them from the price agreement and we indicated to consumers that the supermarket does not comply and that it has done so repeatedly,” explained the official.

In this sense, Tombolini added: “However, they must maintain the prices of the program since their suppliers remain within Fair Prices“.

Among the increases found, Trade revealed that between April and May the 1.5-liter Coca Cola presented a deviation of 43.9%(from $264 to $390); the 1 liter day chocolate milk, 45.10% (from $321 to $449); and Criollitas classic toasts, 41.67% ($207.12 to $299).
