Cement shipments grew 6.1% year-on-year in October, exceeding the expectations of the sector

With 1.1 million tons dispatched last month, during the January-October period they totaled 9.9 million. At the beginning of the year, companies in the area (Loma Negra, Holcim, Cementos Avellaneda and PCR) estimated an annual increase of only 5.7%, and in June they projected an increase in shipments of 15.1% for all of 2021.

This year the cement industry expects to deliver, almost entirely to the domestic market, more than 11.9 million tons (650,000 more than what was predicted in June). In this way, the businessmen of the sector hope to leave behind three consecutive years of falls, caused first by the economic recession and then by the impact of the health emergency.

Cement shipments planned for the current year will exceed the levels of the pre-pandemic period, taking into account that during 2019 they totaled 11.1 million tons. The recent improvement in activity follows last year’s collapse, which limited deliveries to 9.8mt, with the recovery stage turning into real growth, according to the expectation of manufacturers.

The directors of these companies trust that the trend towards a gradual reactivation of the different branches of the construction, verified since the beginning of the year. For the next few months and the first tranche of 2022, companies also hope to maintain the pace of progress both in private and public infrastructure works (mainly roads, energy and housing) throughout the country.

The pace of activity in the cement sector in recent months contrasts with the slowdown experienced in 2020, when the arrival of Covid-19 registered a drop of 11.1% compared to the previous twelve months, after in 2019 dispatches will experience a year-on-year decrease of 6.1%.

Construction

In early September, INDEC shared data on industrial activity that indicated a 19.8% rebound in construction. In this way, the industry accumulated a rise of 21% until September, and construction 53.3%. In the coming days, INDEC will release the October figure.

The sector has already reached a level 25% higher than the pre-covid of February 2020 with a rise of 2.1% per month according to the last figure for September without seasonality measured by the Synthetic Indicator of Construction Activity (ISAC).
