Black Friday and Cyber Monday are originally from the USA. But the discount days are also gaining in importance for the German retail sector.
The retail sector in Germany is expecting record sales on the two upcoming discount days Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
Overall, consumers would likely spend around 4.9 billion euros on the bargain hunt at the end of November, forecast the German Retail Association (HDE). Compared to the previous year, this means an increase of 27 percent. Black Friday takes place on November 26th this year, Cyber Monday three days later on November 29th.
“More and more customers are discovering Black Friday and Cyber Monday for themselves,” said HDE Deputy Managing Director Stephan Tromp. According to a survey by the Institute for Retail Research (IFH) in Cologne, almost every second online shopper wants Black Friday this year go on a bargain hunt. Almost every third person is planning a shopping spree on Cyber Monday.
The importance of the two days of action, originally from the USA, for the Christmas business is now considerable, according to the HDE. It is expected that Christmas gifts for around 1.2 billion euros would be bought this year as part of the two days of action. “This means that gift shopping is increasingly shifting a bit forward,” said Tromp.
