The head of Naftogaz said there are no alternatives to Russian gas

Ukraine cannot yet ensure the flow of gas from alternative sources. This was announced on December 25 by the head of Naftogaz Yuriy Vitrenko.

“Physically, ships with LNG (liquefied natural gas. – Ed.) Cannot enter Ukraine. And even from a terminal in Poland, regasified LNG cannot physically enter Ukraine now, ”he told RBC-Ukraine.

Vitrenko noted that for this in Poland it is necessary to modernize the gas pipeline system. On the Polish side, closer to the territory of Ukraine, it is necessary to expand bottlenecks and invest in infrastructure, he explained.

However, as the head of Naftogaz pointed out, this requires time and investments from Warsaw, which is still inactive, as it is waiting for money from Europe for these purposes.

In addition, Vitrenko said that the issue of its own LNG terminal rests on the passage through the Bosphorus, but Turkey does not yet allow LNG tankers to pass through the strait.

Earlier, on December 23, the press service of Naftogaz of Ukraine reported that the largest Ukrainian gas fields in some cases were devastated by 80%. At the same time, the company intends to increase its own gas production and is developing promising subsoil areas. In addition, Vitrenko said that the company in the summer of 2022 could start gas production at new Ukrainian fields, including on the Black Sea shelf.

On December 22, Naftogaz Ukrainy filed a complaint with the European Commission (EC) with a request to oblige Gazprom to put up for sale via an electronic platform significant volumes of gas for delivery through the Ukrainian territory. The next day, the receipt of the request from Naftogaz of Ukraine was confirmed by a representative of the EC.

On December 17, Vitrenko admitted that the company would not be able to keep gas tariffs for citizens at the current level due to the rise in fuel prices in Europe, where prices for natural gas rose seven times over the year. Now the Ukrainian government is working to ensure that citizens do not overpay seven times, he stressed.
