We strongly support Argentina’s negotiations with the IMF

The meeting was held in the Thomas Jefferson Room and, in addition to Blinken and Cafiero, the ambassador to the United States, Jorge Arguello and its peer in Argentina, Marc Stanley.

Although the meeting was scheduled to address all the issues of the bilateral relationship, at the top of that agenda is the agreement with the International Monetary Fund. The negotiation is going through key days, since in March Argentina would have to face capital and interest maturities that it could not address with the existing reserves. According to Economy Minister Martín Guzmán, the point on which there is no agreement is the speed of fiscal convergence.

“We very strongly support a vibrant Argentine economy”, lAntony Blinken told Cafiero, in what could be read as a positive sign in the midst of discussions about the new program. Along these lines, the Joe Biden official also maintained that “Argentina is a friend and a partner in the hemisphere and beyond.”
