The majority of companies expect stagnation in 2025

2024 was a bad year for the German economy. According to the Ifo Institute, optimism is currently the exception in the executive suites of companies.

A large majority of German companies do not expect their business situation to improve in the coming year. A good 56 percent expect the situation to remain unchanged, while over 31 percent expect it to get worse, as the Ifo Institute in Munich announced. The optimistic companies that expect better business are in the minority at 12.6 percent.

“Companies are currently seeing no signs of an economic upswing,” said Ifo survey director Klaus Wohlrabe. “Given the fact that the economy has already done poorly in 2024, these numbers are worrying.” No industry is really optimistic about 2025.

According to the Ifo survey, the construction industry, which is plagued by a lack of orders, is particularly pessimistic, with half of the companies fearing a deterioration in their situation. In retail, a good 42 percent of companies assume that their business will be worse in 2025. According to economic researchers, the outlook for industry is also poor: 15.7 percent expect an improvement, 31.8 percent expect a deterioration, and 52.6 percent expect no change.
