The government temporarily imposed a restriction on the export of ammonium nitrate

The export of ammonium nitrate will be suspended from February 2 to April 1 this year, the press service of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation reported on February 1.

“A decree of the government of the Russian Federation was signed providing for the introduction of a temporary ban on the export of ammonium nitrate from February 2 to April 1, 2022 inclusive,” the text says.

Such a measure is associated with an additional need for the use of ammonium nitrate in the domestic market – from both agricultural producers and industrial enterprises, the department added.

“Thus, limiting exports will make it possible to provide domestic farmers with the necessary amount of ammonium nitrate during the period of its maximum purchases – from January to March, as well as prevent an increase in prices for this type of fertilizer in conditions of active demand,” said Dmitry Patrushev, Minister of Agriculture.

In particular, in a number of regions of the Southern and North Caucasian Federal Districts, due to the warm winter, spring sowing will be shifted by several weeks and will begin in February, which is already creating an increased demand for nitrogen fertilizers.

On April 7 last year, the Russian government approved the extension of the export duty on rapeseed. The authorities also approved a change in the export duty rate for sunflower seeds.

Earlier, on April 5, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that it is necessary to support the export of high value-added agro-industrial complex (AIC) products. The Minister of Agriculture of the Russian Federation Dmitry Patrushev added that in order to stabilize the situation on the market, from January 1, 2021, the provision of compensation for part of the transportation costs for the export of sugar, potatoes, buckwheat, bottled sunflower oil and grain was suspended.

According to the Agroexport federal center of the Ministry of Agriculture, in 2020 Russia set a record for food supplies abroad. 79 million tons of agricultural products worth $30.7 billion were delivered to other countries. Russian-made products were bought in 150 countries.

On February 8, the Russian government approved the formula for calculating the flexible export duty on wheat, corn and barley from June 2 this year. To calculate the duty, data on the price of listed export contracts for wheat, barley and corn will be used.
