In civil aircraft construction, German industry sees itself in the European group at the top of the world. In the current situation, more thrust is needed in the military and space travel.
After strong growth in civil aviation, the German aerospace industry wants to add more in the military sector. The BDLI industry association demands that the special fund for German defense ability must be consistently invested in domestic companies. “Our companies went in advance through investments, now politics has to make their contribution,” emphasizes Bdli President Michael Schöllhorn.
In addition to arms orders, companies also expect public support in space research, where European independence in the face of reduction in NASA is more important. The world’s leading role in civil aviation must be secured through continued research programs at national and European level.
Two thirds go to the export
According to the association’s figures, the industry’s sales last year grew by 13 percent to 52 billion euros against the trend of German industry. Growth has only reached civil aviation, the proceeds of which have increased by 18 percent to 39 billion euros. The military (10 billion) and space travel (3 billion), on the other hand, remain unchanged. The number of employees grew by 4 percent to 120,000 people. Two thirds of the production went into export and expenditure for research and development were around 3.6 billion euros.
