Solar manufacturer Meyer Burger stops production in the USA

The Swiss company is a problem of cheap competition from China. Now it stops the expansion plans in the USA. This can have an impact in Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt.

The solar manufacturer Meyer Burger, who also works in Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt, hires its solar module production in the United States. Due to the lack of financial resources, the company is forced to stop its solar module production in the United States, which was still in high run, said in Thun in Switzerland. The 282 employees were terminated. “The future of the location is open,” it said.

Short -time work in Germany

The influence of the locations in Hohenstein-Ernstthal and Bitterfeld-Wolfen is still unclear. “Unfortunately, we cannot say anything about this, since the negotiations with the bonds have not yet been completed,” said a company spokeswoman on request.

In Hohenstein-Ernstthal (Saxony) there is a research and mechanical engineering location for solar production. The approximately 300 employees have been in short work since last year. Solar cells are produced in Bitterfeld-Wolfen (Saxony-Anhalt). There have also been short -time work for around 300 employees since May, as the spokeswoman said.

The production in the US state of Arizona has just been built up with solar cells produced in Germany. Meyer Burger is said to be in discussions on restructuring with bonds. Two convertible bonds that are due in 2027 and 2029 are affected.

For years in difficulties

The company has been in difficulties for several years, among other things because of cheap competition from China. In autumn, Meyer Burger had already announced a reduction of around 20 percent of his 1,000 jobs at the time, possibly also in Germany. At that time, however, it was still assumed that the USA will be set up. In December, the company announced that creditors had guaranteed bridging financing of almost $ 40 million.
