Queen forgoes traditional garden parties at Buckingham Palace

The list of cancellations is getting longer and longer: a few weeks before the big celebrations for her throne anniversary, the Queen canceled her visits to the annual garden parties at Buckingham Palace.

It is an appointment that always seemed to give her great pleasure. At the royal garden parties at Buckingham Palace, the Queen walked across the lawn in colorful outfits and chatted with the invited guests. Cucumber sandwiches were served and tea was served. A more casual, open-air get-together to recognize and reward public merit.

But this year Elizabeth II will not be able to participate. This was announced by a palace spokesman, citing the poor health of the 96-year-old monarch as the reason. She has been struggling with walking problems for a long time. Last October she showed herself for the first time in a public appearance with a cane.

Queen is represented by other royals at garden parties

The Queen will be represented at the garden parties by other members of the royal family. Specific details would be announced “in due course,” the spokesman said. In the past two years, the garden parties had to be canceled due to Corona. The first event is scheduled for next Wednesday. Further parties are planned for May 18th and 25th at Buckingham Palace and June 29th at Holyroodhouse, the Queen’s official residence in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The official opening of Parliament in London is also scheduled for next Tuesday. It is still unclear whether the Queen will appear. During the lavish ceremony, the regent usually reads out the government’s program for the coming session. According to information from the palace, a decision on the Queen’s participation should only be made shortly beforehand. The monarch recently had to cancel several appointments for health reasons.

The most important event in the Queen’s calendar takes place in early June: from 2nd to 5th June there will be multi-day celebrations to mark her birthday and her 70th jubilee. Then hopefully in the presence of the 96-year-olds.
