Peer Gynt in Helfenberg: “Now we dare something”

In the Kulturfabrik Helfenberg there is no light summer fare this year: Henrik Ibsen’s classic “Peer Gynt” is on the program from July 27th. The focus is on Peer Gynt, who becomes rich thanks to the slave trade, loses his property in Morocco, ends up in a madhouse in Cairo and finally returns broken to his native Denmark. “For me, it’s a red-hot piece,” says director Andreas Baumgartner, who directs the Theater des Kinds in Linz in his main job. “It’s about a man who believes he owns the world and can take whatever he wants.” There are currently many such figures: “It doesn’t matter whether in politics, business or society.” But why this piece? He and several others suggested it to the club’s board of directors, he says. “The choice immediately fell on ‘Peer Gynt’.” Chairwoman Gabriele Revertera confirms: “We said, now we dare something.” The reactions so far have been consistently positive.

Baumgartner has shortened the classic to reduce the playing time to two and a half hours (including the break). “We will tell the story as stringently as possible.” Christian Morgenstern’s translation is used. A Kapazunder could be won as the main actor: Ljubisa Grujcic, who once studied at the Bruckner University and is now playing in the Vienna Theater in der Josefstadt. Because the play covers a period of 50 years, the main role is usually played by several people – not so in Helfenberg: “Grujcic will play the entire role,” says Baumgartner. The staging should be “timelessly modern”, including allusions to politics. Harald Bodingbauer’s stage design includes a large pool. David Baldessari is responsible for the music and plays live.

After being played on an open-air stage last year due to corona, the theater is returning this year to the 290-seat culture factory. Chairwoman Revertera expects 3,000 visitors for the 13 performances. In the previous year, the utilization was only 75 percent: “In normal years we have 80 to 100 percent,” says the chairwoman. During the performance period until August 14, there will also be two exhibitions by Hermann Eckerstorfer and John Owen in the Kulturfabrik. (hes)
