Renewable energies: Scholz wants the power grid to be expanded quickly, even against resistance

In the opinion of the SPD chancellor candidate Olaf Scholz, Germany needs an “unbelievable speed in expanding the generation capacities and the power grids”.

If the election is successful, the SPD chancellor candidate Olaf Scholz wants to push through the rapid expansion of renewable energies and power grids even against resistance.

“Anyone who is not ready to pick up an excavator to lay a power line and, honestly, argue with a lot of people to make it all work, will not get Germany as an industrialized country CO2-neutral”, said the Federal Minister of Finance on West German Broadcasting.

Germany is facing the largest industrial policy project in probably well over 100 years. “It’s the second industrial revolution,” said Scholz. For the past 250 years, industrial production has been based on the use of coal, gas and oil. To change this, a massive expansion of power generation capacities is necessary. The chemical industry alone will need as much electricity in 2045 as is currently being produced in Germany. The electricity requirements of other branches of industry such as the steel or cement industries will also increase significantly.

It is therefore necessary to have an incredible speed in the expansion of generation capacities and the power grids. “If everything stays the way it is today, we will never be finished in time.”

The SPD candidate for chancellor accused the CDU and CSU of refusing to make the necessary legal changes to accelerate the restructuring. The Greens are good at formulating goals, but “very bad at putting them into practice”. In Baden-Württemberg, for example, practically no new wind turbines were built under the Green Prime Minister.
