Money from the federal government: states are demanding additional billions for the expansion of public transport

It is no secret that the federal states need help from the federal government in expanding local public transport. However, there are still different ideas about the amount of financial support.

In the fight against climate change by 2030, the transport ministers of the federal states insist on support worth billions from the federal government for the expansion of local public transport.

The conference of transport ministers is calling on the federal government to increase regionalization funds from 2022 by an additional at least 1.5 billion euros compared to the previous year, according to a resolution proposal for the special meeting of the transport ministers of the federal states on Tuesday, which the German press agency received. The development path should be secured at least until 2030. The expansion of local public transport, which is necessary to achieve the federal government’s climate protection goals, cannot be achieved without appropriate co-financing from the federal government, it says.

“Everyone knows that we will have to significantly expand local transport in the next few years,” said the Baden-Württemberg Transport Minister Winfried Hermann (Greens) of the dpa. “Because we want to at least double the number of passengers by 2030 in the interests of climate protection. For that we need more trains and better clocks. And that also requires significantly more funds. ”

Because of the corona pandemic and the sharp drop in passenger numbers, there had been high revenue losses in local transport. Last year, the federal government provided an additional 2.5 billion euros for local transport – in addition to the annual regionalization funds, which this year will increase to around 9 billion euros. For the year 2021, the federal government has decided to renew federal aid for local public transport in the amount of one billion euros.
