Elena Roger returns to her incomparable Édith Piaf

This role earned Roger the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress, and features performances by, among others, Julia Calvo, Rodrigo Pedreira, Natalia Cociuffo, Diego Jaraz and Iván Espeche. With a repertoire of 13 emblematic songs, among which “La vie en rose” and “Non, je ne regrette rien” stand out, it is one of the most brilliant musicals that have been adapted in Buenos Aires. We talk to Roger.

Journalist: How do you experience this return of “Piaf”?

Elena Roger: Those of us who were in the original project, both actors and artistic team, came back. Except for two actors, one lives in Austria and the other is with another project, but the rest bet again, even the same English director returned and has been in the country for ten days. Beyond everyone’s careers, it was a resounding yes. It is a moving meeting beyond the success and ticket sales.

P.: They are running out of everything.

ER: The theater is a great mystery, when it has to work, it works. They had offered me several times to do it again but for many years I said no, until I had the perception that this was the moment, I wanted to be sure.

Q.: Why did you say no?

ER: Although it was important because with “Piaf” I consolidated myself here and abroad, at the same time I began to lose the focus of my career, my life was just my career and I wanted to have more life. I wanted a home, children. It was beautiful but it exhausted me, I wanted to do and be other things, not just Piaf, so then came Escalandrum, the tours, and when “Piaf” was ten years old, Adrián Suar suggested I do it. But the director couldn’t, and Suar told me to direct it myself. I didn’t feel up to it. So this time we started putting it together with the assistant waiting for the director. Lloyd was 27 years old when he staged Piaf for the first time and in these 13 years he made almost 70 works, he is the director of the moment, he premiered Chekhov’s “The Seagull” in London in a single staging. He brought more maturity in his direction, with a new look.

Q.: What can you say about Édith Piaf?

ER: He is a very educational character because he has survived and gone through great adversity. She was there to sing, the only thing that mattered to her and that she enjoyed was that which took her to another world. This work tells in almost two hours how wonderful it is to live it all, and it also has humor. Her life was colored by music, as was mine. I really enjoy doing it, we are all more mature. 13 years of life and ego passed.

Q.: What do the producers who once again bet heavily post-pandemic and deal with the ups and downs of the dollar say?

ER: We opened 13 years ago with influenza A, we suspended functions, they closed the rooms and later it was still a success. I believe in not losing the objective and going through the war. The world can be peaceful and you have a big problem. The pandemic made us grow. Suar decided to invest what he invested in this production, which is not cheap, and fortunately the public responds because he shows that he wants to leave.
