JK Rowling revealed that she feared her ex-husband would burn the Harry Potter manuscript

“At this point he searched my bag every time I came home. I didn’t have a key to my own house because he had to control the front door. And I think he’s not a stupid person. I think he knew, or suspected, that I was going to try to escape again,” Rowling said, according to the British newspaper The Guardian.

The writer and Arantes met more than 30 years ago in a bar in Porto where Rowling taught English and where, from the relationship they established, they discovered their common passion for Jane Austen.

That passion that was born between them led them to get married shortly after, but their marriage barely lasted 13 months, during which time, according to the author, she suffered psychological and physical abuse. For her part, Arantes admitted that the discussions were escalating and that she slapped him twice and that she did not regret that conduct, according to the Spanish newspaper ABC.

Rowling stated that during those days she lived in “a horrible state of tension”. because he had to hide his intentions to leave the family home, despite which he could continue writing. “The manuscript kept growing. I kept writing. In fact, he knew what that manuscript meant to me because at one point he took it and hid it,” said the author of the saga.

In order to leave home and save the work he was writing, he had to come up with a plan. “He would take a few pages of the manuscript to work every day – just a few so he wouldn’t realize something was missing – and photocopy them. And, little by little, in a closet in the staff room, the photocopied work grew. And it grew and grew, because he suspected that if he couldn’t get away with it all, he would burn it or take it or take it hostage.” The author, who was pregnant at the time, assured that, apart from her daughter Jessica, who is 31 years old today, that manuscript was the only thing she wanted to save in her escape.

In the ‘podcast’, the writer had a dialogue with Megan Phelps Ropera former member of the Westboro Baptist Church, known for its controversial comments and its frequent protests against the LGBT community and other marginalized communities.

Regarding the accusations of transphobia that Rowling is awarded, she stated that she is not concerned about how the controversy surrounding her will affect her legacy and that anyone who thinks so has misinterpreted her “profoundly”.

“I don’t walk around my house thinking about my legacy”said and pointed out: “What a pompous way to live your life, walk around thinking, what will my legacy be? I don’t care, I’ll be dead. I care about now. I care about the living.”
