People: Hoss about shooting with an orchestra: “I thought I was going crazy”

Actress Nina Hoss has already experienced a lot. The shooting of the new film “Tár”, in which she plays the concertmaster of a world-famous orchestra, overwhelmed the 47-year-old.

Actress Nina Hoss (47) described the shooting with the Dresden Philharmonic for her latest film “Tár” as a highlight of her career. “It’s one of the greatest gifts and experiences I’ve had with my job so far, where you can always look into other lives and jobs,” said Hoss (“Barbara”) in Berlin. “When do you ever sit in the orchestra? I mean while they’re playing?”

In the film “Tár” starring Cate Blanchett as the (fictitious) star conductor, Hoss plays the concertmaster of a world-famous orchestra in Berlin. The film will start in German cinemas on March 2nd.

For the role, Hoss was part of the orchestra. The moment it started playing was overwhelming for her. “And then this sound comes and I thought I was going crazy,” said Hoss. “This sound. This fullness. This great beauty. You actually sit in the body of the instrument.”

The film team was welcomed by the Dresden Philharmonic with “so much care and affection”, enthused Hoss. “And they sometimes looked at us somewhere like funny little animals,” she says. “But what was so nice is that we always said: We are your guests here now – but somehow you are also our guests because you play and you don’t normally do that.”
