The slideshow of notable deaths that aired behind Kravitz includes names like Angela Lansbury, Ray Liotta, Jean-Luc Godard, Irene Cara, Kirstie Alley, Raquel Welch, Nichelle Nichols, Burt Bacharach, Vangelis and many more.

Those that were missing (and that caught the eye on Twitter) include Charlbi Deanthe leading actress in the Oscar nominee for Best Picture The triangle of sadness that he passed away suddenly at the age of 32; Anne Héche, who died in a car accident in August; the star of goodfellas, Paul Sorvino; and Tom Sizemorewho starred in the Oscar-nominated film Saving Private Ryan as part of a long career.

the star of fiddler on the roof, Chaim Topol, was also left out. He died Thursday at the age of 87.

The Academy said when it revealed Kravitz as the artist that “more than 200 filmmakers, artists and executives” will be commemorated in an extended photo gallery in the Academy’s digital magazine, A.frame, a way to extend the televised roster.

The emotion of John Travolta when presenting the segment In Memoriam

John Travolta hosted the segment tonight and choked on those the industry lost over the past year, at one point saying they’re “desperately devoted to you,” a reference to a line in the song by Olivia Newton John of the same name from Grease.

Travolta and Newton-John starred in the 1978 musical film. Newton-John died in August 2022 at age 73. Newton-John was included in tonight’s tribute.
