The brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm came third with their fairy tales, which have been translated into 70 languages. follow behind Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (62 languages), Bertolt Brecht and Hermann Hesse (53 languages each) and Franz Kafka (52 languages).
The Austrian Stefan Zweig (“Schachnovelle”) came in 10th place with his works translated into 48 languages. Right behind him is the founder of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud (“The Interpretation of Dreams”), a. At number 13 is the poet Rainer Maria Rilke to find.
Right behind is the best-ranked woman with Christine Noestlinger (45 languages) also an Austrian. Her children’s books such as “We don’t give a damn about the cucumber king” can be read in Albanian, Hebrew or Thai.
Nobel Prize in Literature Peter Handke is found at rank 25 (37 languages) and Thomas Brezina in 38th place (29 languages). Elfriede Jelinek on the other hand, despite winning the Nobel Prize for Literature, is not one of the 40 most frequently translated authors in the German-speaking world.
The data basis for the study comes from the Index Translationum, a UNESCO database that archives and lists literary translations worldwide. Only official translations from recognized publishers were considered.
