Miss Germany breaks with age limits. A “long overdue” step, says Dagmar Wöhrl.
For the first time in the history of Miss Germany, women over the age of 39 can also apply from this year. “It was long overdue,” says Dagmar Wöhrl (68) happily in an interview with spot on news. “Who decides that women can only be beautiful if they are under 30? “Die Höhle der Löwen”-investor was named Miss Germany in 1977 and was also on the jury of the beauty contest. “Being there has developed me personally.” , the 68-year-old looks back on her own participation.
Dear Mrs. Wöhrl, Miss Germany breaks with age limits. What do you think of this development?
Dagmar Wöhrl: That was long overdue! Because beauty has no expiration date. Who decides that women can only be beautiful when they are under 30? We all meet women over 50 who have such great charisma that you can’t take your eyes off them. Why shouldn’t they be able to compete with younger ones?
What opportunities do you see for older participants in the competition?
Wöhrl: Beauty is often in the eye of the beholder. A lot has happened in recent years thanks to the body positivity movement. We are finally seeing more diversity among women in the advertising industry. It’s not just 90-60-90 that’s nice and that’s a good thing. In that respect I think that mature participants definitely have a chance.
What advantages do women over 39 have over younger competitors?
Wöhrl: You have life experience. As a rule, they have both feet on the ground, are professionally established, have started a family and have survived the first life crises. In short: They know what they can do and they know what their bodies can do. They know how to emphasize the virtues and stand above the little flaws that each of us has.
Would you like to sit on the jury again in 2023?
Wöhrl: That would depend on the concept. I think there have to be some changes there too, that go with the times. But basically I wouldn’t say no.
You were once Miss Germany yourself, what memories do you still have today?
Wöhrl: Until I took part in Miss Germany, I was more of a shy, introverted young woman. Performing there has developed me personally because I have lost the shyness of standing and speaking in front of many people. This later helped me a lot in my job. What I still have in positive memory today is the togetherness among the participants. Of course we were competitors, but behind the scenes we had a lot of fun.
Could you imagine running in the election again today?
Wöhrl: For me, this section is behind me. But I can only encourage every woman to apply.
