Sylvester Stallone to star in ‘Cliffhanger’ sequel – 30 years later

Action fans rejoice. 30 years after Sylvester Stallone had to assert himself as a mountain rescuer against ruthless terrorists and the forces of nature in the Rocky Mountains in “Cliffhanger”, the story of Barney Ross continues.

He is one of the biggest action stars and even at the age of 76 he never gets tired: Sylvester Stallone became world famous with box office hits like “Rambo” or “Rocky” and has remained true to his genre to this day. The last time he was seen was in September in the role of Barney Ross in The Expandables 4, but that’s not the end of Stallone’s retirement.

In addition to his current TV series “Tulsa King” and the action comedy “Never Too Old To Die”, which was recently confirmed for Amazon Studios and is scheduled for release next year, the 76-year-old has already taken on another project. As the industry magazine “Deadline” reports, Stallone will once again slip into the role of Rocky Mountain Ranger Gabe Walkers, which he played in the film “Cliffhanger – Only the Strong Survive” in 1993. It is already the second attempt to continue the film after 2014.

“Cliffhanger” action: fight terrorists at dizzying heights

In the first part you see Stallone next to Michael Rooker as an employee of a mountain rescue service, whose friends and colleagues die one day while climbing a mountain. Stallone, as Gabe Walker, vowed never to climb a mountain again. Shortly thereafter, however, he has to throw this resolution overboard again when a government plane with 100 million dollars on board crashes in the mountains.

In search of survivors, Walkers and Rooker must face not only the Rocky Mountains, but also ruthless terrorists who search the icy heights of the mountains for the lost suitcases full of money and will stop at nothing. The 90s film grossed over 255 million US dollars worldwide, was nominated for three Oscars and was praised above all for its successful, spectacular stunt work.

Unlike 30 years ago when Renny Harlin (“Die Hard 2”) directed, Ric Roman Waugh will be at the helm of the sequel. Waugh is known for his work on Felon, Snitch, Greenland and Angel Has Fallen. Neal H. Moritz, who is responsible for the “Fast & Furious” series, and Stallone’s own label “Balboa Productions” will also be involved in the production.

“It will be a great challenge to take this franchise to new heights”

“I grew up watching and worked on a lot of the biggest action movies of the ’80s and ’90s, and ‘cliffhanger’ was by far one of my favorite spectacles,” Waugh tells Deadine. “To be at the helm of the next chapter and scale the Italian Alps alongside the legend Sylvester Stallone is a dream come true. It will be a huge challenge to take this franchise to new heights, a responsibility I do not take lightly.”

Moritz adds that he will never forget the thrill he felt when he first saw Stallone in “Cliffhanger.” “I’m thrilled to be working with him and Ric Waugh to continue the story of Gabe Walker and show it to a new generation of movie fans.” Who will stand in front of the camera next to Stallone is still open – the castings are already underway.

Details about the plot of the sequel are not yet known. However, it is rumored that it should surpass the classic in terms of shooting effort. It is still unclear when the second part of “Cliffhanger” will be released in cinemas. The script is written by Mark Bianculli, who has already had great success with his work on “The Good Neighbor” and series such as “Hunters” and “Lincoln Rhyme: The Bone Hunter”.
