Anxious to expand their catalogues, popular libraries began a tour of the Fair

Within the framework of the fortieth anniversary of democratic life, Bianchi highlighted the “questioning of the subjective bases that gave support to the organizational forms of democracy, to values”, and outlined the problem of the expansion of the capitalist system, which “does not he needs humans, working” and for this reason “he considers us disposable”.

“The values of our democracy are being worn,” he affirmed.

Next, María Pía López interviewed the French-based Italian philosopher and sociologist Maurizio Lazzarato. In line with what Bianchi raised, the conversation addressed topics such as democracy, financial crises, the war in Ukraine, the militarization of (European) society and fascism: “Italy invented fascism,” she asserted. And she elaborated: “The real problem with the Ukraine war is that the United States is losing the power of financial value.”

As part of the meeting, plenary sessions were held by Natalia Sternschein and María Emilia López, and finally Claudia Piñeiro’s dissertation on the right to read, under the title “About censorship, one’s own and that of others”, where He raised his position on the cancellation and defense of freedom of expression.

Based on historical milestones, the author of “The Time of the Flies” reviewed the panorama of the ways censorship acquires, which led her to mention Devetach among other writers who suffered censorship exercised by the dictatorship, that of groups organized as the parents’ associations in Florida, United States, which exert pressure so that some readings are withdrawn from the school programs. He also referred to self-censorship, “for fear of what the market imposes today, of aggression in the networks, of cancellation. A fear of another order, of course, but without a doubt a serious danger for full freedom of expression” , indicated.

“The memory of those times should encourage us to fight for the use of the word and for reading without conditioning in these other times that we have to live in,” said Piñeiro.

As a closure of the first part of the day, the 2023 Friend of Popular Libraries distinction was awarded to the renowned author of children’s and youth literature Laura Devetach. A recognition granted by Conabip since 2006 and received last year by María Teresa Andruetto. The words of gratitude of the honoree were in the voice of her friend Cecilia Bajour, since health problems prevented her from attending.

“For me it is a very important acknowledgment of a place in my country that has always interested me, precisely the place where the closest books live to those who, almost always with help, can approach and discover them. It is a great honor and I thank Conabip and all those who democratically nominated and elected me,” the writer born in Reconquista, Santa Fe and author of “La torre de cubos,” the storybook censored during the dictatorship, told Télam.

Next, the 14 popular libraries from different localities and the provinces of Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Chaco, La Pampa, Tucumán, Entre Ríos and Corrientes that celebrated their 100 and 150 years of life were honored. Next, the other major axis of Conabip’s action within the framework of the Fair took shape: the Libro% program, through which libraries throughout the country receive a subsidy that allows them to cover lodging, per diems, and the money to buy books. chosen by their readers, with a 50% discount on the retail price; this year with an investment of the national State that reaches 356,529,000 pesos that are distributed among 983 institutions, while there are more than 230 affiliated publishers that offer their catalogues.

Between the search for novels, self-help books and school supplies, the representatives of the popular libraries began to tour the different stands of the Fair to get the reading material requested by their members, a task as diverse as the community that hosts each one of these institutions, its location and the public it serves and represents.

In the case of the José Ingenieros de Freire Library, in the interior of Córdoba, Patricia described to Télam that they already had the lists prepared with what “the member likes”, and in her particular case they aimed at adolescents, “because it’s been two or three years old who are very interested in reading and we don’t want to lose them, is an audience that is too lacking in most libraries”. The librarian said that the search was aimed at novels of all kinds, “romantic, suspenseful, historical that they like a lot”, and that this year they would point to comics “which is a boom and is what the boys are looking for”.

“This year we are aiming for that,” he indicated and assured: “We always try to buy even one or two materials to carry an assortment of everything.”

In the case of the Morteros Popular Library, 100 km from Balnearia, in the interior of Córdoba, since they already bought children’s books on another occasion, now they come “to buy novels, books on politics and self-knowledge, those therapies biodecoding alternatives, which are coming out a lot,” according to what they said.

“It is the main topic of the moment, I think that due to the emotional situation,” Freire’s librarian noted. “Books linked to ‘neuroemotion’ are in great demand, and this could be read as a derivative of the post-pandemic.” In the case of this library, the public is more adult and they recognize a debt in promoting reading among adolescents.

Also from Cordoba, from Carderillo, the libraries indicated that they came to acquire novels. “We have a more reading population, they are older people, mostly women who are interested in novels, historical novels, some horror, police, self-help books,” they said.

The case of the Rosa Parks Popular Library in Salta is different, as Carlos Paredes indicated, which has a varied audience: “We have both university students (who are looking for very specific books), the general public, children, and also people who are interested in classical and modern literature,” he remarked. As a particular demand, he said, the purchases these days will be aimed at school manuals, the most recent editions, “because we are a neighborhood that is growing and has new parents with children who are already of school age, even in high school.” .

“We are going to see if this year we get some secondary and primary titles of interest and updated above all, because many demand updates from us. Of course also novels”, he assured.
