Nobility: Spain’s Crown Princess Leonor becomes a soldier in August

In Spain, the king or queen holds supreme command of the military. King Felipe also underwent military training. His daughter is now following suit.

For the Spanish Crown Princess Leonor, life begins in earnest on August 17th. On the day the eldest of the two daughters of King Felipe VI. (55) and Queen Letizia (50) begin a three-year military training program, as announced by the Ministry of Defense in the Spanish Official Journal. The 17-year-old is to be trained in all three arms (army, navy and air force).

The TV station “Telecinco” and other Spanish media reported on Wednesday, citing the ministry, that Leonor would waive the monthly salary of 400 euros to which she was entitled. According to official information, she will begin her training at the Army’s Military Academy in Zaragoza. Before that, Leonor has to do her Abitur at boarding school in Wales. At the beginning of August, the traditional summer vacation of the Spanish royal family in Mallorca is on the agenda.

Move to Wales

The Crown Princess, who will come of age on October 31, left the royal residence Palacio de la Zarzuela northwest of Madrid in late summer 2021 to go to Wales. She has continued her schooling there ever since. She attends UWC Atlantic College on the South Wales coast not far from Cardiff. Located in the medieval castle of St Donat’s Castle in the Vale of Glamorgan, the school has often been compared by the Spanish media to the Hogwarts School of Magic in the Harry Potter novels.

Military training in Spain’s royal family is common not least because the king or queen also holds the supreme command of the military. King Felipe also completed a three-year military training between 1985 and 1988.
