A year ago, Robbie Williams caused a stir with an exhibition of his own paintings. Now he seems to be switching to comic art.
In May 2022, singer Robbie Williams (49) showed a creative side that nobody would have expected from him before. Together with his “creative partner” Ed Godrich, he presented for the first time a series of large-format paintings that he had painted in his garage during the Corona pandemic. The exhibition took place in the noble rooms of the traditional auction house Sotheby’s in London.
“It used to be cocaine and strippers – now it’s painting”
In one he explained at the time that painting was a way for him to get his mental problems under control. “I would definitely say that I spend a lot of time not having to deal with Radio Rob,” he said, referring to the self-destructive tendencies in his head. “It’s safer for me to be out here doing this than in there.”
In recent years he has finally managed to escape his previous rock star lifestyle: “It used to be cocaine and strippers – now it’s painting”.
Funny comic art on Instagram
After painting, the all-round artist seems to have now turned to drawing comics. he published two drawings, announcing that more would follow.
In one of those quirky comics, he’s apparently alluding to the strict diet regimen he’s put on in preparation for this year’s tour. The drawing shows a winner’s staircase, as known from sporting events, with spindly female stick figures on the three steps. Above it is emblazoned the work’s wry title, “She came first at the Ozempics.”
The background: Ozempic is a diabetes drug that is also being traded as a new miracle diet drug.
