Meghan and Harry: New York chase mystery

After an event in New York City on Tuesday evening, Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan said they were followed by several paparazzi. There are now conflicting statements about the process.

The story is reminiscent of the death of Princess Diana and that’s why it’s so frightening for many royal fans. As the BBC reported on Wednesday, among other things, Duchess Meghan, her mother Doria Ragland and Prince Harry are said to have been chased by several paparazzi in vehicles in New York City on Tuesday evening, resulting in an “almost catastrophic chase”. The photographers are said to have bothered the trio for more than two hours. There were several near-accidents “with other drivers on the street, pedestrians and two New York police officers”. It was “relentless pursuit,” a spokesman for the Sussexes said.

Duchess Meghan and Prince Harry: contradicting statements about the chase

A few days later, there are contradictory statements about what happened. Most recently, Harry and Meghan’s taxi driver spoke to the “Bild” newspaper about the events. The three had gotten into his car to distract the photographers and hang out. Basically, Sukhcharn Singh confirmed what happened on Tuesday evening, but limits the drama. According to him, the journey took around 20 minutes. “I didn’t see anything particularly dangerous – they stayed behind us,” he said of the paparazzi. Singh is used to driving celebrities through Manhattan from time to time.

There was also a statement from the New York police. “There were numerous photographers who made transportation difficult,” said NYPD spokesman Julian Phillips. “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex arrived at their destination and there have been no reported clashes, summonses, injuries or arrests in connection.”

New York Mayor speaks out

New York Mayor Eric Adams condemned the photographers’ behavior as “reckless and irresponsible” and revealed that two police officers could have been injured. “New York City is something other than a small town somewhere. You shouldn’t drive too fast anywhere, but this is a densely populated city,” he said, but restricted to “New York Daily News”: “It’s hard for me believe there was a two-hour chase.”

Chris Sanchez, a former Secret Service employee and member of Meghan and Harry’s security team, explained the process to CNN. The chase “could have ended fatally,” he said, and “the public was in danger in several places.” “I’ve never seen or experienced anything like that. What we experienced was very chaotic. There were about a dozen vehicles: cars, scooters and bicycles,” he said.

But the story gets even more confusing: In the meantime, a lawyer for the Sussexes has written to the photo agency Backgrid, asking them to hand over all the photos from the night in question. The agency’s response was clear, as “TMZ” reports. “In America, as I am sure you know, property belongs to the owner: third parties cannot simply demand that it be handed over to them, as perhaps kings can do. Perhaps you should sit down with your client and point out to him that his English Rules on the royal prerogative of requiring citizens to cede their property to the Crown were long ago rejected by this country. We stand by our Founding Fathers.”

It is obvious that the incident awakens old trauma, especially in Prince Harry. His own mother, Princess Diana, died in a Paris tunnel in late summer 1997 after numerous photographers followed her vehicle and chased her. In his autobiography “Reserve” (“Spare”), Prince Harry reveals that he was in Paris himself a few years after her death and drove the route. He asked his driver to drive at the same speed as Diana’s driver had done in 1997.
