Actress: The indefatigable “Denver Beast” – Joan Collins turns 90

Joan Collins became world famous as the “Denver beast” Alexis Carrington. It’s been decades since the role on the TV soap opera, but the actress is still in the spotlight – even at 90.

Red lips, purple eyeshadow, wildly teased curly mane – this is how the British Hollywood diva Joan Collins addressed her fans in a video message at the beginning of May. The actress has announced a new one-woman show for October. She will tell her most amusing and outrageous stories, she promises in a whisper.

At the same time she is promoting her new memoir entitled “Behind the Shoulder Pads”. In the fall, readers will find out what happened behind the shoulder pads that were so popular in the 1980s. The former “Denver beast” can hardly be stopped, this Tuesday (May 23) Collins turns 90 years old.

Still in the spotlight

It’s been a while since her big appearances in front of the film and television cameras, but the diva continues to be glamorously in the limelight. She recently jetted to the Lower Rhine with her fifth husband, Percy Gibson. The Brit was the big star at the Sonnenklar.TV travel channel’s “Golden Sun” awards ceremony on April 22 in Kalkar – there was also an honorary award for life’s work.

The actress and author posts eagerly on Instagram, sometimes from Los Angeles, London or the south of France. For years she has been commuting between several places of residence.

As the daughter of a theater producer, Joan Henrietta Collins came into contact with show business early on in London. She made her stage debut at the age of nine. In 1955 she stood in front of the camera for the monumental film “Land of the Pharaohs” in Hollywood. She directed more than 50 films and TV series in the first three decades of her career alone, alongside film greats such as Richard Burton, Kirk Douglas, Gregory Peck, Paul Newman, Bette Davis and Elizabeth Taylor.

“The Denver Clan” writes TV history

Collins rose to worldwide fame in the early 1980s as the devilish Alexis Carrington. With the cult soap “The Denver Clan” (original title: “Dynasty”) about the rivalry between the two rich families Carrington and Colby and their oil companies in the state of Colorado, she wrote television history, especially as a beastly ex-wife, that of her blonde successor Krystle (Linda Evans) makes life difficult with intrigues. It was about money, power and sex – for eight years. In 1983, Collins won a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama Series.

Collins doesn’t mince words, just like her most well-known role character. There are enough stories from the old days that she likes to tell again and again: How Bette Davis kicked her across the set while filming. How Marlon Brando devoured ice cream in her fridge. How, as a young starlet, she was forced by the studios to lose several pounds. She chats about her five husbands and how she lost to Elizabeth Taylor in 1960 for the coveted Cleopatra role.

She is particularly proud of her “Lady” award. In 2015, Collins was honored with the title equivalent to the chivalrous “sir” for men. The award recognized her decades of social commitment. “It humbles me to receive this level of recognition from my Queen and my country and I am thrilled and truly grateful,” she said in the BBC interview at the time.

Happy with Percy

After four marriages, including short-lived ones with British actor Maxwell Reed and Swedish singer Peter Holm, the mother of three has had a much younger man by her side for more than 20 years. In 2002 she gave her vows to Peruvian theater manager Percy Gibson, who was 32 years her junior.

“Wishing my wonderful, gorgeous husband a fabulous birthday full of surprises,” Collins wrote on Instagram alongside a photo of the beaming couple on his birthday last October. “I love you honey,” she added with lots of kiss and heart emojis.
