British Royals: Prince Edward thanks for reconciliation work

Royal journey into German-British history: in Potsdam, at the end of his visit to Germany, Prince Edward visits the house of a Jewish doctor who fled to England from the Nazis.

During a visit to Potsdam, Britain’s Prince Edward paid tribute to the German-British commitment to education and reconciliation. On Tuesday, at the end of his visit to Germany, he looked at the Alexander Haus, the former summer home of the Jewish doctor Alfred Alexander, who fled to England from the Nazis in 1936 and brought his family to join him. He praised the work of an association that has been taking care of the restoration of the house in Groß Glienicke since 2013 and wants to turn it into a place for education and reconciliation. “Well done to everyone who helped bring this amazing home back to life,” he said.

The youngest brother of King Charles III. spoke to students from the Hans-Carossa-Gymnasium in Berlin-Kladow, who have dealt with the house and its history – and with a book about it. The British author Thomas Harding – chairman of the association and great-grandson of the summer house builder Alexander – processed the history of the house and his family in the book “Summer house on the lake”. Prince Edward chatted with the students and asked one boy what he remembered from the book. The ten-year-old reported on the family and the house by the lake in excellent English. And Prince Edward also spoke about his school days.

The Duke of Edinburgh was in high spirits during the visit and kept cracking jokes. Before unveiling a plaque of honor at the Alexander Haus, he asked guests, “Are you ready?” He spoke to numerous people who have campaigned for the preservation of the Alexander House. A new building for a meeting place is planned – with the participation of the office of the British star architect David Chipperfield.

Prince Edward has so far been overshadowed by his brothers, but his role is now becoming more important. On Monday, he presented the “Duke Award” to committed students from all over Germany. The international youth program “Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award” aims to motivate young people and young adults to volunteer. The program, under the 59-year-old’s patronage, was founded by Edward’s father, Prince Philip. On Tuesday he traveled on to Prague.
